Now that all of us should be spending a lot of time at home, watching tv becomes an inevitable part of our routines. You may come across numerous advertisements of toothbrushes and toothpastes. Soft, sensitive, 360° rotating heads, automatic heads and what not.
Ayurveda has mentioned the ideal tool for thorough cleaning of oral cavity, including the toothbrush and toothpaste.
मृद्वग्रं कषायकटुतिक्तकम्।।
The object used for brushing, i.e. the toothbrush must be मृदू अग्र which means it should have smooth and soft tip. In ancient times, plant twigs were used as brushing device. Today, most of us use plastic or organic toothbrushes. So, adapting to the current times, it is recommended to use a soft or ultra soft toothbrush. Ayurveda discourages the used of medium or hard bristled toothbrush. These toothbrushes are harsh on three delicate inner lining of your mouth. They cause injuries to the inner layer of cheeks, tongue, gums etc. And result into disorders such recurrent mouth ulcers.
On the other hand, soft toothbrushes are gentle on your gums and yet clean the teeth, mouth thoroughly without causing any damage or harm.
Now further moving over to the toothpastes and powders, people now a days end up eating toothpaste while brushing because of the sweet taste. Ayurveda states that the toothpaste should be essentially astringent, bitter or pungent and not sweet or salty to taste. Most of the toothpastes available today in the market, are sweet. In fact, we’ve made it even worse by adding salt to it which is absolutely a no- no as per Ayurveda.
Astringent tasting ingredients tighten the gums, promote wound healing. They also help arrest gum bleeding. Bitter ingredients cleanse the mouth thoroughly. Both these ingredients are anti septic. Hence, they prevent infections in the oral cavity.
These types of toothpastes, improve the overall oral health.
In case of you’re suffering from gum problems, mouth ulcers or other oral problems, rethink about your choice of toothbrush and toothpaste and consider changing those!
